First, let’s dispense with the idea that this book has too many stereotypes in it. In the early part of the twentieth century, most American Jewish people did live in New York and especially on the Lower East Side. The types of foods eaten in this book were, in fact, the types most often consumed in Jewish people’s homes, and special ones were always part of certain holy days. Jewish and Irish people were not quite as assimilated in American culture as they are now, and parents would be silly to reject this great book just because Papa’s peddler friends seem a little “Old World”. (I don’t believe in revisionism just to placate a bunch of over-sensitive mommies and dads.) This book has good lessons about family loyalty, taking responsibility for mistakes, looking after the things you are fortunate enough to have, and choosing chocolates instead of crackers so your midnight feasts won’t be betrayed by crumbs. Modern-day kids will be able to relate to stuff like battles of will at the dinner table, chaotic outings, and the arrival of a new sibling. Celebrations of Shabbat, Purim, and Succot are made beautiful and lively by the author, and are a great way for kids to get a little insight into Jewish life. Yet these girls are American girls first and foremost, and they love the same things about American culture as any kid reading about them today. This is one of my favorite books from childhood. I will say that more girls than boys will be interested in reading it, because of many female characters, the themes of family and home life, and the wistful Charlie and his long-lost love. But this is a quality book.

What would you do if you had to go into a cave full of dragons? Well in this book Harry, Fishless, Bulldog, and Snoutalout had to go into it the cave and get a dragon.
When they get their dragon they have to train their dragon until the dragon can fish, hunt, and battle in two months or else their coach (Gobbler) will destroy them with his club. Later Harry taught his dragon how to fight, fish, and hunt because he used lots of effort on it. I also use effort on stuff like swimming, basketball, and tennis. Sometimes we both think that when something is really hard we think that were going to fail.

We will share many a happy moment together reading Curious George.

As a 1st grade teacher, these books are indispensable for my emerging readers who still need a short, quickie book that allows them to focus their skills on basic decoding and sight words. The pictures are a delight and the kids feel very comfortable with these. The pictures really help the kids who are struggling with the vowels. Familiarity is key.

Dallas and Florida are ‘trouble twins’ and in some ways this is a troubling story. They are 13-year-old orphans who have been shuttled from dysfunctional family to sadistic family to heartless family and then back to an orphanage, run by the evil Mr. and Mrs. Trepid.
This might sound grim (sorta Charles Dickenish), but because of Sharon Creech’s skillful writing, the story is really about hope and healing. You will fall in love with the four main characters - Dallas and Florida and their temporary foster parents in Ruby Holler, Tiller and Sairey. These oldsters show great compassion and forgiveness, and their love breaks through the walls erected by Dallas and Florida. Likewise, Dallas and Florida help Tiller and Sairey to appreciate their lives in the paradise of Ruby Holler.
